Medroxyprogesterone (Meprate) is a type of female hormone (progestin). This medication is similar to the progesterone that your body naturally makes and is given to replace the hormone when your body is not making enough of it. This medication has several uses. In women who are not pregnant and not going through menopause, this medication is used to treat abnormal bleeding from the uterus and to restore normal menstrual periods in women who have stopped having them for several months (amenorrhea).

Medroxyprogesterone (Meprate) is also used as part of combination hormone replacement therapy with estrogens to reduce menopause symptoms (e.g., hot flashes). Medroxyprogesterone (Meprate) is added to estrogen replacement therapy to reduce the risk of cancer of the uterus.

The tablets work by influencing the uterine lining (endometrium) to stop growing, thus reducing risks such as endometrial cancer and alleviating symptoms of endometriosis. It also plays a role in regulating the menstrual cycle in women suffering from hormonal imbalances. Medroxyprogesterone has been found to be particularly useful in preventing and treating conditions where the natural progesterone hormone is deficient or imbalanced.

How to Take Medroxyprogesterone (Meprate)

Medroxyprogesterone (Meprate) tablets should be taken whole with a glass of water, with or without food, at the same time each day. The dosage and duration depend on the condition being treated and should be followed as prescribed by your doctor.

Warnings and Precautions

• Do not use if you are allergic to Medroxyprogesterone or any of the ingredients in the tablet.
• Do not take if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• Consult your doctor if you have liver disease, a history of blood clots, or suffer from porphyria (a metabolic disorder).
• Avoid use if you have a history of certain cancers such as breast or endometrial cancer, or severe uncontrolled hypertension (high blood pressure).

Missed Dose/Overdose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at once to make up for a missed dose. In case of overdose, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Storage

Store Medroxyprogesterone (Meprate) below 25°C in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep it out of reach of children.

Possible Side Effects

• Common side effects may include acne, menstrual changes (spotting, missed periods), breast tenderness, dizziness, and nausea.
• Other possible side effects include skin rash, hair loss, weight changes, fatigue, and headaches.
• If you experience severe side effects such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or vision changes, seek medical help immediately.
